Campbell Park Amenities

The Abbotsford Juniors Football Club (AJFC) is a wonderfully vibrant and inclusive community football club with its home ground located at Campbell Park in Chiswick. The club approached us to design new amenities block with generous new spaces to replace the old badly dilapidated and impractical amenities. We reached DA approval in 2015 on the Club’s 50th anniversary, with works on the amenities commencing in 2017 and hand-over in 2018.

The project is a simple utilitarian building which maximises the economy and efficiency of a steel structural skeleton and the low-maintenance nature of face brickwork to provide the local community with a robust and practical new building. Functionally the plan is split into 3 functional zones/volumes. The first includes a generous and well organised storeroom for the football club, as well as public toilets/baby change facilities. The middle section has home and away change rooms, a referee’s room with first aid bed, and a café. The end volume houses an open plan community hall, available for hire for functions. In between these zones generous undercover spaces link the local street to the park and allow for refuge from the sun and rain. The café space has full commercial kitchen facilities and is a vast improvement on the previous canteen.

The building is future-proofed in terms of modular structural bays along for future extension if necessary, and exposed cable trays allowing for easy addition of cabling and services for any required upgrades.

Designed in close collaboration with the football club – as well as the City of Canada Bay Council, the project exemplifies how council and government funding can be used to maximise the benefits to a grass-roots local sporting club and the surrounding community. We hope that these new facilities will serve the club and the locals for decades to come.
