Dulwich Hill Terrace

The hero in this project is the existing free-standing terrace house, uniquely located on a wide corner lot in the Inner West suburb of Dulwich Hill. When our clients originally purchased the property, they fell in love with the quirky original features and grand rooms of the terrace and knew they could improve it to better suit their growing family. They lived in the existing house with its awkwardly configured back rooms until they outgrew it and wanted to modernise it to better suit their lifestyle.

The terrace house has now been lovingly restored, with a formal sitting room and wine room downstairs (complete with integrated wine storage under the existing staircase), and the kids two bedrooms upstairs. The rear extension, painted a dark colour in contrast to the sandstock brick of the terrace, reads as a recessive shadow hiding in the back. The new ground floor contains an open-plan living space, with exposed rafters and re-used brickwork from the demolition. The first floor houses the master suite, a home office, and a family bathroom.

Throughout the house, restored or re-purposed features and materials retain the original character of the dwelling, with vintage furniture pieces complimenting the interiors. Approved through the Complying Development process, the project gives a fresh life to the site and its occupants, showing that older structures can be respected and integrated with new extensions, even if they are not heritage listed can easily be knocked down.
